What is high potential and gifted education?

Inspire – High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.

Our students engage with  HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.

In our classroom

  1. Differentiated Curriculum

    • Hands-on research and home tasks aligned with classroom curriculum that provide opportunities for students to explore concepts more deeply and independently.
    • Use of NSW Department of Education Units of Work for English and Mathematics, which offer structured and scaffolded sequences adaptable for extension and enrichment of high potential and gifted students.

  2. Enrichment Programs

    • Opportunities for deeper exploration in students’ areas of interest through project-based learning, independent research, or thematic units.
    • Utilising experiences at Longneck Lagoon and Brewongle Environmental Education Centres (EEC) to provide hands-on, inquiry-based learning in natural settings that enrich student understanding and engagement.

  3. Flexible Grouping

    • Grouping students by ability, interest, and across grades and stages for targeted instruction and collaborative learning.
    • Incorporating groups for AsmPo Maths starting in Stage 1 and Maths Olympiad preparation and participation.

  4. Mentoring and Coaching

    • Connecting students with mentors or experts in particular fields to provide challenge and guidance.
    • Linking students with peers through activities like buddy reading sessions to encourage collaborative learning and peer support.

  5. Use of Technology and Digital Resources

    • Access to advanced learning platforms, coding, robotics, and other tech-based challenges.
    • Using technology to differentiate learning, tailoring tasks and resources to meet the diverse needs of high potential and gifted students.

  6. Independent Study, Self-directed Learning, and Reflective Practices

    • Allocating time and resources for students to pursue personal interests with teacher oversight.
    • Supporting students in developing self-awareness and goal setting with parents and teachers.
